Zakat in Ramadan
Millions of Muslims choose to pay Zakat during Ramadan. This guide explains the Islamic basis for that choice and answers the most common questions.
Can you pay Zakat in Ramadan?
Yes — Zakat can be paid at any point after your Hawl (the one-year anniversary of your wealth reaching the Nisab threshold) is complete. Many Muslims choose Ramadan because it is the holiest month of the Islamic calendar, and all good deeds carry multiplied reward.
Is Ramadan Zakat more spiritually rewarding?
According to hadith, good deeds in Ramadan are multiplied in reward. While the Zakat obligation itself does not change, many scholars agree that giving Zakat during Ramadan carries additional spiritual merit — provided your Hawl has actually completed before or during Ramadan.
What if my Hawl has not completed in Ramadan?
You may pay Zakat in advance of your Hawl completing. The payment is still valid, and many scholars permit early payment for the purpose of giving in Ramadan. However, if your wealth falls below the Nisab before your Hawl completes, you would need to recalculate.
Zakat al-Fitr vs Zakat al-Mal
Zakat al-Fitr is a separate, smaller obligatory charity paid at the end of Ramadan by every Muslim who is able. It is a fixed amount (approximately £5-7 per person) paid in food or its monetary equivalent. This is different from Zakat al-Mal — the 2.5% wealth Zakat calculated by our calculator.
