Zakat Nisab 2026

The Nisab is the minimum wealth threshold for Zakat to be due. It's based on the current market value of silver or gold — and it changes with spot prices. Here are the current 2026 figures across major currencies.

Gold Nisab
~£7,304–£7,394
87.48 grams × ~£83.50–84.50/g (May 2026)

Why silver Nisab is recommended

There are two valid Nisab thresholds — based on silver (612.36 grams) or gold (87.48 grams). The silver Nisab is far lower: in 2026, it's around £499, while the gold Nisab is approximately £7,394. The majority of contemporary scholars recommend using the silver Nisab because:

  • It ensures more Muslims fulfil their Zakat obligation
  • It distributes more wealth to those who need it
  • The Prophet (PBUH) set both thresholds — scholars consider silver to have been the primary currency standard of the time

NZF, Islamic Relief, Muslim Aid and most UK Zakat charities use the silver Nisab as their published threshold.

How to use the Nisab

The process is straightforward:

  1. Calculate your total net zakatable wealth (cash + gold + silver + stocks + business assets, minus short-term debts)
  2. Compare to the silver Nisab (~£499 in May 2026)
  3. If your wealth equals or exceeds the Nisab and you have held that level for one complete lunar year (Hawl), Zakat at 2.5% is due on the total

Use our calculator to do this automatically — it applies the current Nisab and handles all asset types.

How the Nisab is calculated

The silver Nisab is fixed at 612.36 grams of silver (equivalent to 52.5 tola). The gold Nisab is fixed at 87.48 grams of gold (7.5 tola). These weights are set by Islamic law and don't change.

What changes is the price per gram. Multiply the fixed weight by today's spot price to get the Nisab in your currency:

Silver Nisab = 612.36 g × silver spot price (per gram)

Gold Nisab = 87.48 g × gold spot price (per gram)

FAQs

What is the Nisab for Zakat in 2026?
The silver Nisab for Zakat in 2026 is approximately £496–£499 (UK), based on 612.36 grams of silver at current spot prices of around £0.81–£0.82 per gram. The gold Nisab is approximately £7,304–£7,394, based on 87.48 grams of gold at approximately £83.50–£84.50 per gram. Silver prices fluctuate daily so you should check the current spot price on the day you calculate your Zakat.
Which Nisab should I use — silver or gold?
The majority of scholars recommend using the silver Nisab because it is lower, meaning more Muslims fulfil their obligation. The gold Nisab is much higher and would exempt many Muslims who can genuinely afford to give. NZF, Islamic Relief and most UK charities use the silver Nisab. However, if your wealth mainly consists of gold jewellery and you want to follow the opinion that gold and silver have separate Nisab thresholds, you may use the gold Nisab for gold assets.
Does the Nisab change every year?
Yes. The Nisab is based on the market value of 612.36 grams of silver (or 87.48 grams of gold) on the day of your Hawl. Since precious metal spot prices fluctuate daily, the Nisab in pounds sterling changes constantly. In practice, it moves slowly enough that a monthly figure gives a good approximation. Major UK Zakat charities publish updated Nisab figures monthly.
How do I calculate if my wealth exceeds the Nisab?
Add together: all cash in bank accounts, the current market value of gold and silver you own, the value of stocks and shares, business trade stock at cost, and money owed to you. Subtract short-term debts currently due. If the total exceeds the silver Nisab (~£499), Zakat at 2.5% is due on the total.
What is 612.36 grams of silver worth in 2026?
At approximately £0.81 per gram (May 2026 spot price), 612.36 grams of silver is worth approximately £496–£499. At £0.85 per gram it would be approximately £520. Always use the actual spot price on your Hawl date for an accurate figure. Our Zakat calculator uses a live-updated Nisab value.
